Perry is the daughter of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both her two appearances on Roseanne. Her parents did not allow her to begin acting in front of her family until she reached adulthood, as they feared the anxiety it could create. Perry claims she never wanted to be an actor in highschool but decided to start playing as a way to make friends at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. Perry started her acting career with New York after graduation, landing minor roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry return to California to work as an actress in the theater. In 2013, she was a part of The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. In 2015, she performed with her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in 9 episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. She had a regular role in the ABC political drama Scandal, starring her dad. She played an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The actress was chosen for the role in spite of her strong family connection to the character.
